community building-one swing step at a time

Congratulations to the community groups and citizens of Crozet who turned out for the Salute to Swing fundraiser dance for Crozet Fire and Western Rescue on February 5.  The community groups, notably the Lions,  Ruritans, and Community Association, sought ways to work together on projects such as the July4th parade and support their Emergency Service agencies. Their work raised over $2100 cash for the two agencies, plus more in donated expenses.

A large contingent of Boy Scouts from Troup 74 set up tables and chairs. Community members provided refreshments of baked goods and snacks. Brenda Plantz and Parkway Pharmacy installed lovely table decorations and balloons. A wide array of popular raffle items and informal talks by Chief Gentry of the Fire Co and President Bill Wood of WARS spiced up the evening. The breakdown crew had everything to rights by midnight.

By far the highlights were the sensational music of the 17 piece band and the free swing dance lesson from 7-8. A free swing dance lesson with Mike Herring and Melissa Pancurak of  Swing Cville taught everyone several swing steps and stayed for the evening, providing encouragement to dancers and several demonstrations. Members of the band were inspired to one of their best performances by the wild applause and constant dancing.

From 3 to 93, all ages enjoyed the music and the dancing. The community groups put an event together, where each group or person chose their role and stepped up to fulfill it. The result is terrific. Everyone is looking forward to next year.
